How Do I Know If I Have A Slab Leak?

The short answer is you don't! Most slab leaks aren't really noticible untill its too late and a flood happens. That being said, there are a few clues to look for which might help you decide if you need to call us. Here's a list:

  1. A constant hiss or humming sound
  2. A hot spot on the floor
  3. Wet areas around the bottom corners or edges of a wall
  4. A significantly larger water or gas bill
These symptoms don't necessarily mean you have a slab leak, but do point to a leak happening somewhere in your plumbing system.

Slab Leak Vs. Pinhole Leak

A slab leak is a pinhole leak that has formed under the foundation (or slab) of your home. It will require some form of leak detection, and usually a few holes in the drywal to properly locate and isolate the leak. A Pinhole leak is exactly that, a pinhole sized hole in a copper pipe, the only difference is that these leaks occur above ground and can usually be seen within a few hours. Most people notice a wet spot on the drywall or floor and sometimes if you put your heard against the wall you can hear a loud hiss. These are much more easier to fix, but since the pipe is behind the wall, you'll need to hire a professional dywall patcher as most plumbers don't offer this as part of their service.

Other types of leaks.

Leaks can occur in many places and on many different things. Common places you may suddnely find a leak are:

  • Under the kitchen sink
  • Under the bathroom sink or around the toilet
  • Outside pipes and faucets
Although we've mostly talked about water, gas leaks can happen also. If you notice the smell of gas it's important to shut down whatever it's connected to if possible, and contact the gas company. After that a good plumber is necessary to fix whatever issues the gas company finds.

Major And Minor Plumbing Repairs

I understand it can be hard to know what is actually happening to your plumbing, so don't.  I can diagnose almost any plumbing problem from a small leaking faucet or toilet, to a major slab leak or sewer repair.  Circle City Plumbing And Drain has got you covered.

What Is Considered A Major Or Minor Repair?

Minor repairs are items which can usually be diagnosed and fixed in a few hours, with simple repair parts. Things like leaky toilets, faucets, hose connections, and faucet installation are all minor issues for most plumbers. Major repairs often require specialized tools to diagnose hidden issues. They often require cutting drywall in several places, jackhammering, and are usually found because of a flood. Circle City Plumbing And Drain is well equiped to handle any job, and is happy to walk you through every step of the way.
